ISIS leader killed following US operation in northern Syria, one of the non-Arab leaders of the jihadist group. Abdulrahman al Mavli al Selbi, a Turkmen born in Talafar, was also held responsible for the ”genocide” of the Yazidi minority in Iraq.
Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Quraishi became a new head of the Islamic State (ISIS) after its previous leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was killed in a military operation by US force in October.
The true identity of the leader remained uncertain. The name Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi was a nickname used in the war. The Guardian said that al-Qurayshi was determined as al-Salbi, a Turkmen from the Iraqi city of Talafar.
The Guardian described him as one of the jihadist group’s founding members and responsible for controlling the organisation’s actions worldwide. El Selbi was the brother of Adil Selvi, the Turkey representative of the Iraq Turkmen Front. The Guardian said he had led the “genocide” of the Yazidi minority in Iraq. He was arrested by the US soldiers in 2004 and taken to Buka Camp to meet with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. According to the report, El Selbi is also thought to have at least one son.
During the press conference yesterday, US President Biden also said that al-Qurayshi was responsible for the Hesekê attack in January 2022. Biden said, “He was the driving force behind the genocide of the Yazidi people in northwestern Iraq in 2014.”
Before Baghdadi’s death, the US State Department had placed a $5 million bounty on Selbi. In August, rumours emerged that Baghdadi was not in a leadership position in the organisation, and discussions were held that “Al-Selbi will be the new leader of ISIS”.
