Zagros Hîwa, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK), has pointed to a new plan by international powers to partition Syria and reduce Iran’s influence in the country. According to Hîwa’s statement, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel aim to divide Syria into three regions and use the Kurdish issue as a bargaining tool in their dealings with Turkey.
“The plan devised by the United States, Israel, and the United Kingdom is to divide Syria into three regions: a Sunni region, an Alawite enclave for Bashar al-Assad, and to use the Kurds as a bargaining chip in negotiations with Turkey. The goal is to sever Iran’s connection with Lebanon by creating a Sunni corridor,” he said.
Hîwa emphasised that this ‘new plan’ is part of the ongoing third world war, which is unfolding in various regions across the globe. Following the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, Syria has now become the new focal point, with the United States and its allies seeking to weaken Iran’s foothold in the country, he explained. The KCK spokesperson further warned that this plan poses a significant threat to Kurds, particularly in the areas east of the Euphrates in Rojava.
“Undoubtedly, there is a great danger for Kurds. Since the 1978 Maraş massacre in northern Kurdistan (Turkey’s Kurdish-majority southeast), there has been an international plan to depopulate the Euphrates region of Kurds. Turkey has dramatically altered the region’s demography, especially in cities like Adıyaman (Semsûr), Maraş (Mereş), Malatya (Meletî), Urfa (Riha), Antep (Entab), and Sivas (Sêwaz), which were once Kurdish majority,” Hîwa said.
“Many Kurds have been displaced to Europe or major Turkish cities, and some have been forcibly assimilated into Turkish Sunni identities. This demographic engineering is now being repeated in Rojava (Kurdish-led northern Syria), beginning with the occupation of Afrin in 2018,” he continued.
Turkish forces have reportedly begun military assaults in Shahba (Şehba) and Tel Rifaat (Til Rifat), and Hîwa predicts these attacks will spread further afield with widespread repercussions.
“What is happening in Syria is part of the third world war, involving both international and regional powers. While international powers like the United States and Russia are key actors, the role of regional powers like Turkey has also been instrumental,” he said, discussing broader dynamics.
“Turkey served as a crucial ally for the United States and the United Kingdom in facilitating the operations of groups like Jabhat al-Nusra and Daesh (ISIS) in Syria. However, Turkey failed in its initial objectives, and now Kurdish resistance has emerged as a significant force in the region.”
Hîwa concluded by highlighting the risks posed by the new international plan, describing it as part of a broader strategy by the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel to reduce tensions in Ukraine by focusing on the division of Syria and weakening Iran’s role in the Middle East:
“This is a coordinated international plan, using Kurds as a bargaining tool with Turkey, while pursuing the partitioning of Syria and the isolation of Iran.”
