The Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) urged Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) to implement a democratic reform following significant defeats for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in local polls.
In the statement issued on Friday, the KCK, a Kurdish umbrella organisation, stressed that the recent municipal elections should serve as a turning point for Turkey, with the CHP now holding a crucial role in leading the country towards democratic reform. It emphasised the importance of addressing the Kurdish issue and the overall democratisation of Turkey as vital for the country’s future stability and development.
The statement highlighted manipulation tactics and anti-democratic processes used during the 31 March elections, particularly in Kurdish regions, and called for significant democratic reforms in Turkey.
The elections on 31 March not only shifted the political landscape but also highlighted longstanding issues of Turkish governance, according to the KCK. The organisation pointed out the use of fraud and coercion, especially in Kurdish regions, to sway election results. Despite these tactics, the AKP and its allies failed to secure control, marking a significant shift in Turkish politics, the KCK stated.
The KCK underscored the electoral losses of the AKP, which has been in power for over two decades, and said its governance was detrimental to Turkish society and democracy.
In their call to action, the KCK emphasised the urgent need for the CHP to embrace a new path. “The CHP must understand well how these election results came about and recognize the role of the Kurdish people and the revolutionary democratic movement of Turkey in the struggle against fascism. The CHP must put forward its plan and program to democratize the republic by taking democratic steps,” the KCK urged.
