Erem Kansoy’s latest podcast, Political Dialogue with Erem Kansoy, featured Jino Victoria Doabi, a political scientist specialising in international politics. Doabi criticised the international community for its inadequate response to Turkey’s attacks on northern Syria and Syrian Kurdistan, or Rojava, particularly its support for jihadist groups such as the Syrian National Army (SNA). “Warnings against Erdoğan are not enough,” she said. “The West must step up and impose clear consequences for Turkey’s actions, especially considering Turkey’s NATO membership and its implications for regional stability.”
A key focus of the discussion was the critical importance of establishing a no-fly zone over northern and eastern Syria. Turkish aerial attacks have targeted civilians and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), undermining efforts to stabilise the region. Doabi pointed out that a no-fly zone would save lives and enable the SDF to continue its decade-long fight against ISIS. “Stopping Turkish aggression is not just a moral obligation but a strategic necessity to prevent the resurgence of jihadist groups,” she stated.
Doabi described Rojava as a beacon of hope in the region, with its commitment to democracy, human rights and gender equality. She highlighted how the SDF protects not just Kurdish autonomy but also the rights of diverse communities, including Alevis, Christians and Yazidis. “Rojava’s values align with those of the West, making it imperative for democratic nations to support this experiment,” she said.
The podcast concluded with an urgent appeal for Kurdish unity and international solidarity. Doabi stressed that collective resistance is crucial to counter the threats posed by Erdoğan’s regime and its jihadist proxies. “The Kurds, along with other oppressed communities in the Middle East, must unite to defend their rights and preserve the democratic vision of Rojava,” she said.
This episode of Political Dialogue with Erem Kansoy is a compelling call to action for international powers, shedding light on the stakes involved in protecting Rojava and upholding democratic values in the Middle East.
