Verso Il Kurdistan (Towards Kurdistan), an association founded by Italians to support the Kurdish cause, recently paid an official visit to the northern Italian city of Alessandria together with the Italian Kurdistan Information Bureau, to request honorary citizenship for Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
Mayor Giorgio Abonante warmly welcomed the delegation and promised to give serious consideration to their requests, Erem Kansoy from Medya Haber TV reported.
The delegation consisted of the co-presidents of Verso Il Kurdistan, Lucia Giusti and Antonio Oliverieri, the famous Italian cartoonist Zerocalcare, and Yılmaz Orkan, representing the Italian Kurdistan Information Bureau.
Mayor Abonante began the meeting by expressing his honour and gratitude for the visit. He paid tribute to the recent concert held in Alessandria in support of Öcalan and praised the broad participation of Italian intellectuals, politicians, academics and university students in a panel discussion on the resistance of the Kurds and Yazidis. He also expressed his sincere appreciation to the organisers of the event.
Zerocalcare addressed the gathering and spoke passionately about the Kurdish people’s ongoing struggle for freedom. He emphasised the profound influence of Öcalan’s ideas and philosophy on his own work and world view.
