Artists from Italy condemned Turkey and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for the recent airstrikes in northern Syria in a statement, calling on European institutions to break their silence and complicity.
“Erdoğan does not want peace and coexistence, he wants to expand Turkey’s borders and crush those who claim their rights regarding their culture, language and traditions,” the artists said in a petition.
The Turkish strikes target territories freed from the Islamic State (ISIS) by the people who are under fire, they said.
“We want to break the silence that accompanies Turkey’s new war against the peaceful experience of democratic confederalism. We want a peaceful solution for the Syrian peoples,” they continued.
They called on Italian media to report on “the barbarism initiated by Erdoğan”, and politicians to take a stand, and “just as they ask for an end to the Russian occupation of Ukraine, demand that Turkey instill a ceasefire, respect territorial sovereignty and recognise the self-government born of the expulsion of ISIS from the region”.
In the statement, artists including Zerocalcare, Elio Germano and Fiorella Mannoia said democratic confederalism was a revolutionary form of government and a possible peace proposal for the entire Middle East.
