The absolute isolation in Turkey’s İmralı Island Prison is a violation of fundamental human rights and a hindrance to peace in the region, said Michela Arricale, an esteemed international human rights lawyer in a recent interview with Medya Haber TV’s Erem Kansoy.
Arricale, Vice-President of the Italian Center for Research and Elaboration on Democracy/International Legal Intervention Group (CRED/GIGI), emphasised the legal dimension of the issue.
“The isolation of Öcalan is against any law, so it must be stopped because it’s torture,” the Italian lawyer said. However, Arricale also highlighted the broader political ramifications of Öcalan’s isolation, noting that its continuation obstructs the path to a peaceful resolution of the Kurdish question.
“Only the liberation, the end of isolation, the liberation of Öcalan, could restart a peaceful process to solve the Kurdish question and it could be the start of another history, another peaceful and democratic history of the Middle East,” she stressed.
Drawing on her expertise in human rights and international law, Arricale made a compelling case for the immediate release of Öcalan, emphasising its significance not only for the Kurdish community but for global peace and stability. She concluded by affirming, “Öcalan has to be freed, has to be released immediately for the peace, for the peace of the world.”
