A delegation from the Iraqi parliament arrived in Sulaymaniyah in the country’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region on Monday to investigate an attack on the city’s international airport on Friday, North Press reported.
The delegation, which includes members of the Iraqi parliament’s Security and Defence Committee, is the second to arrive from Baghdad following the incident, for which the Iraqi government demanded a formal apology from Turkey.
The delegation is expected to provide a report based on information to be collected about the incident and submit it to the parliament later, a source in the Iraqi parliament told North Press.
The parliamentary delegation will meet with leaders of the Sulaymaniyah-based Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), as did the government delegation which arrived in Sulaymaniyah on Saturday.
The explosion at the airport took place days after Ankara announced that it had closed its airspace to aircraft travelling to and from Sulaymaniyah due to what it claimed was intensified activity in the area by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
All eyes turned to Turkey following the incident, as Mazloum Abdi, the commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) was in Sulaymaniyah at the time of the explosion, which is reported to have been caused by a Turkish drone attack. Turkey claims that the SDF is an extension of the PKK and has been targeting Abdi in recent months.
