The Iraqi foreign ministry spokesman said on Sunday that there are ‘expansionist goals’ behind Turkey’s military operations in Iraq, and stressed that there is no security or military agreement with the Turkish side that could be used as an excuse for the aggressions, Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.
Ahmed Al-Sahaf told INA that the letter sent to the United Nations Security Council about the attack in Duhok informed the Council of the nature of the risks involved in the recent attacks, which extended to urban settlements in Iraq.
The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday on Iraq’s request, to discuss the situation regarding the artillery attack that killed nine civilians and injured 23 in Duhok in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) on 20 July.
The Iraqi authorities are accusing Turkey of the attack and say they have evidence that it was carried out by Turkish forces.
Al-Sahaf said:
“Tuesday’s session will be decisive and will witness a presentation of all technical and specialist reports on the latest attack.”
He added:
“Our letter also emphasised the need for the Turkish side to apologise to Iraq and to its people for the losses inflicted on innocent people and the infrastructure”
He said that they expected the Security Council “to issue a statement condemning the Turkish aggression against Iraq’s sovereignty.”
