Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched missile and drone attacks against Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in the Kurdistan Region, on Sunday night.
The Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI) announced that IRGC attacked PDKI and adjacent refugee camps in both Koya and Jejnikan, Iraqi Kurdistan. A peshmerga was killed in Iranian strikes on Koya, near Erbil (Hewler), reported AFP on Monday.
PDKI called on the international community to hold the Iranian regime accountable for military attacks on Iranian Kurdish opposition parties.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) defined Iranian attacks on Kurdish groups as “indiscriminate and illegal”. CENTCOM commander General Michael “Erik” Kurilla condemned the attacks and said that the attacks “place civilians at risk, violate Iraqi sovereignty, and jeopardise the hard-fought security and stability of Iraq and the Middle East.”
Iranian attacks against Kurdish groups coincide with Turkey’s air raids against Kurdish fighters in Iraqi Kurdistan.
Turkish air strikes launched in the early hours of Sunday on north and east Syria and northern Iraq continue into Monday. More than two dozen people died due to Turkey’s aerial attacks.
Meanwhile, Iranian Security Forces increased violence, especially against Kurdish cities, to suppress the protests sparked by the death of 22-year-old Jina (Mahsa) Amini which have continued for over two months.
