The Kurdistan Human Rights Association (KMMK) today issued a statement, announcing that a Kurdish youth, named Şahin Deyrzade, was tortured to death by the guards in an Urmia prison.
Deyrzade has been recently arrested and sentenced to one year and three months in prison, according to Roj News.
He was held in the cell numbered 15 in the central prison of Urmia in northwestern Iran. After a quarrel with the prison administration, Deyrzade was transferred to an unknown destination.
On 28 September, the family of Deyrzade was called to receive his body. According to KMMK, the prison administration who called the family told them to visit Khomeini Hospital’s morgue.
“In order for the body to decompose and for the forensic medicine doctors not to reach a conclusion on the grounds of death, they kept Deyrzade’s body waiting in the morgue’s defective refrigeration unit for postmortem changes to make it difficult to determine the grounds of his death,” KMMK said.
KMMK reported that the grounds of death of the young Kurd was officially recorded as a “heart attack,” but the information they received from sources in prison indicate that he died under torture.
