A petition launched by a campaign to find Warisheh Moradi, an Iranian Kurdish women’s rights activist who has not been seen or heard from in over three months, calls on international organisations to intervene and take decisive action.
Moradi was arrested on 1 August by Iranian security forces in her home town of Sanandaj (Sine) and taken to an unknown location, since when there has been no information about her whereabouts.
The Freedom for Warisheh Moradi campaign appeals to international organisations to put pressure on the Iranian government to take immediate action in Moradi’s case, and to apply appropriate measures regarding other political prisoners in the country.
“At the time of her abduction, Warisheh Moradi was engaged in political activities and organising women secretly in Iran. Her activities infuriated the Islamic Republic of Iran. They often target freedom-seeking women,” the campaign stated in a petition launched on 11 November.
As a member of the East Kurdistan Free Women’s Society (KJAR), Moradi was active in the ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ (Woman, Life, Freedom) movement that erupted across Iran, and spread globally in September of last year. The Iranian security forces implemented a violent crackdown on the ensuing protests, which were part of a long history of dissent against the suppression of women and minority rights in the country.
