Iran’s Kurdish city of Mahabad saw large protests on Tuesday evening over the death of political prisoner Peyman Galwani after allegedly being subjected to severe torture in detention.
The funeral of the 24-year-old took place under heavy Iranian security force presence. Galwani was buried to a loud chorus of the Kurdish resistance anthem “Ey Reqib”.
In the social media footage shared from the funeral turned mass protest, drones are seen flying over the city.
Galwani had been arrested on 25 June by Iranian security forces at his family home in Mahabad. He was moved on 5 July from the detention centre to a hospital while unconscious. The security forces informed Galwani’s family that he suffered a fall from a height, resulting in a comatose state. Galwani died on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Mahabad prosecutor attributed Galwani’s death to “severe illness”. In response, Norway-based Hengaw organisation published evidence of Galwani’s torture on Tuesday, including images of the bruises on his body.
