International Women’s Day was celebrated by several women-led organisations and thousands of women in Diyarbakır (Amed) with the slogan “We defend life against the massacre of women and freedom against isolation”.
Under the Dicle Amed Women’s Platform, speakers described the gender inequality, discrimination and oppression that women face on a daily basis.
Songül Kapancı spoke on behalf of the Organisation Committee at the rally and emphasised the struggle of women.
The Sur Gowend band and the singer Xalide provided music for the event.
Democratic Regions Party (DBP) co-chair Saliha Aydeniz greeted the women in the rally by speaking several Kurdish dialects. Aydeniz said that women will not give up their rights. Drawing attention to the hunger strike resistance, Aydeniz affirmed solidarity with the protests and vowed not to remain silent.
She declared that women will unite and continue their struggle all over the world, while women in the audience chanted “We will win by resisting”, and “Jin jiyan Azadi”.
The rally continued with a musical performance by Xecê.
