The Lausitz region in Germany hosted the International Folklore Festival LUŽYCA-LUŽICA-LAUSITZ for the 14th time in 28 years, inviting folklore groups from around the world to participate in an international exchange from 6 to 9 July.
The festival holds great importance for the Lausitz region and the Domowina, the umbrella organisation of Sorbian societies in Lower and Upper Lusatia. According to Dawid Statnik, Chairman of the Domowina, folklore is inherently political. He believes that traditions and folklore have the power to bridge divides and find common ground in a time marked by rising nationalism and conflicts. Statnik emphasises the importance of preserving culture and finding unity through the festival, stating that despite the challenges of the present, folklore and culture offer a necessary respite.
However, the Sorbian community also faces significant challenges, particularly regarding language and cultural preservation. The loss of language and culture has become apparent, exacerbated by the destruction of numerous villages due to coal mining. Despite these challenges, the festival serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of the Sorbian community to preserve their heritage.
