The international campaign “Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan—A Solution to the Kurdish Issue” will host “Dialogue with Öcalan” event days from 15-22 June.
“As the Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan Campaign Committee, we extend the call to join the global days of events against the isolation in İmralı and to spread his ideas,” the committee urged.
The committee highlighted serious concerns about Öcalan’s health and ongoing solitary confinement in Turkey, where he has been detained for over 25 years without proper external contact. “The last time he met his lawyers was in August 2019, and since March 2021, all contact has been cut off,” the group explained. They criticised established human rights institutions for their inaction: “Despite numerous requests and available information, they did not intervene against the unlawful practice of isolation, considered torture.”
The influence of Öcalan’s writings on democracy, ecology and women’s liberation continues to inspire global intellectuals, activists and politicians. His ideas have catalysed the development of an autonomous, self-governing social system in northern and eastern Syria. “Organise your events in dialogue with Öcalan’s ideas,” the committee invited, emphasising the ongoing relevance of his democratic-ecological vision and his formulation of “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” or Woman, Life, Freedom—a significant slogan in the 21st-century women’s liberation movement.
