The People’s Defence Forces (HPG) have reported a series of successful operations against Turkish military forces in the Metina (Metîna) and western Zap (Zapê) regions of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). According to a statement released by the HPG’s press office on Sunday, their forces targeted Turkish military personnel and equipment over several days, halting enemy movements and inflicting casualties.
The HPG, an armed wing of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), launched three separate attacks in the Metina region on 8 and 9 August, targeting Turkish military vehicles with medium and heavy weaponry. The HPG claims that these attacks successfully disrupted Turkish military operations, forcing them to retreat from their positions. The statement highlighted a particularly effective attack on 9 August, where a Turkish bulldozer was struck numerous times, leading to its destruction and a subsequent withdrawal of Turkish forces.
The HPG also reported a series of attacks in the Zap region on 9 and 10 August. These included strikes on Turkish military positions in the Mount Amediya (Girê Amediyê) and Mount Judi (Girê Cûdî) strongholds using heavy weaponry and sniper tactics. The HPG claimed that six Turkish soldiers were killed, and several others were injured in these engagements, which were part of a broader strategy to disrupt Turkish military advancements in the region.
The HPG also accused the Turkish military of using banned explosives in their operations, specifically targeting resistance tunnels in and around Mount Judi on 10 August. The statement alleged that these attacks violated international law and further escalated the ongoing conflict.
The Turkish military conducted a series of airstrikes on 8 and 10 August, targeting multiple areas in the Hakurk (Xakurkê), Gare (Garê) and Metina regions. According to the HPG, these airstrikes caused significant damage but did not result in the loss of any Kurdish fighters.
The HPG’s statement concluded by reaffirming their commitment to resisting Turkish military operations in northern Iraq, and expressed their determination to continue their fight until their goals are achieved.
