Speaking at the conference of the Women’s Assembly of North and East Syria, Ilham Ahmed the top official of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) stated that the United Nations (UN) didn’t report sufficiently about the crimes committed by Turkey and its proxies in occupied Syrian territories.
Ilham Ahmed said:
“People are being abducted in occupied territories. The Turkish MIT (national intelligence agency of Turkey) abduct citizens on Syrian soil and torture them.”
Stating that the Turkish administration should be held accountable for such offences in international courts, Ahmed added:
“The United States identifies the crimes committed by the Syrian government as war crimes, but the crimes of the Turkish state are not identified within the same category.”
Ahmed called upon the international community to identify Turkey’s incursions as the invasion of Syrian soil, and to enable representatives of independent institutions and groups of legal specialists to access territories under occupation for monitoring and reporting on the situation.
The SDC is the political wing of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the main armed force in North and East Syria that defends the region, which defeated the Islamic State and ended its control over Syrian territories in 2019. The SDF announced on 23 March 2019 the seizure of the last area of ISIS territory in Syria after capturing the city of Baghuz.
The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) was established at the third conference of the SDC on July 16, 2018 in the city of Al Tabqa.
