The Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Urfa province Co-Mayor Emine Çetiner was detained whilst she was attending a commemoration of the 2015 Ankara ISIS suicide bombing. Çetiner was in Suruç district of Urfa for the commemoration event and taken to the provincial gendarmerie command centre.
She was accused of “making propaganda for an organization”. During her interrogation, Çetiner stated that she was restrained by placing her hands behind her back and handcuffed, and threatened with sexual assault by soldiers. She also claimed that she was hit by the soldiers and thrown against the car and there are bruises on her body because of that.
Çetiner was referred to the court and the prosecutor’s office issued a request for her arrest. She was released on condition of judicial control. Çetiner confirmed that she is going to file a criminal complaint with her attorney about her mistreatment.
