At a press conference held at the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Istanbul Provincial Organization, HDP spokesperson Ebru Günay said that “almost everyone is under threat in Turkey, and the danger has only increased. The only way to prevent that danger is an everyday struggle— to act together and create an antifascist struggle bloc.”
Günay drew attention to increasing attacks on Kurds in recent weeks in Turkey. She stated that racism in Turkey is well-organized and protected by the government, adding that an “apartheid regime” had been created in the country.
Pointing to the widespread impunity for racism in Turkey, Günay said: “Unfortunately, unless the impunity system and the laws that protect racism change, the problem will remain and deepen.
“The sole way of preventing it is to create an anti-fascist bloc in a democratic consciousness,” the HDP spokesperson added.
Günay also discussed the economic conditions in Turkey: “According to hunger and poverty line numbers, it costs 2 thousand 410 Turkish Liras (TL) for a family of four people to eat enough. The poverty line is 8 thousand 304 TL. Sixteen million of citizens are poor, and 18 million
citizens live below the poverty line.”
Günay said that everyone in Turkey except for a small minority of the population is facing increasing uncertainty. The only way to prevent this, she explained, was to join together in an antifascist struggle bloc.
