A drilling operation for a geothermal plant in Sarayköy, located in Turkey’s Denizli province, was disrupted by an explosion on Monday that released hydrogen sulfide gas into the environment. The incident, which took place 850 metres below the surface, propelled geothermal water several metres into the air. Remarkably, there were no reported casualties or injuries.
Emergency services swiftly responded to the site. A key road leading to the Babadağ district was also temporarily closed to manage the situation.
Firefighting teams at the scene confirmed that there is no risk of further combustion. Plans are in place to seal the affected well soon, overcoming challenges posed by the intense water pressure and gas. An official investigation into the causes and impact of the explosion has been launched.
