JinNews has released footage showing that Kurdish political prisoner Garibe Gezer (28), was tortured in prison before later being found dead in her prison cell.
In the footage, prison guards drag Gezer screaming into a room, a guard hands a baton to the female guards inside the room and the guards wipe the sweat off their brows as they leave. The inside of the room is not visible to the camera.
Gezer, who had been systematically raped and subjected to sexual torture by prison officers, lost her life in suspicious circumstances in a prison cell on 9 December 2021.
A criminal complaint regarding the torture and sexual assault of the Kurdish political prisoner was dismissed by the prosecutor despite the existence of solid evidence.
Recently, Kandıra State Prosecution decided not to prosecute anyone for her death ‘on grounds of lack of evidence’.
Gezer’s lawyers announced on Friday that they will apply to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) over the decision of Kandıra State Prosecution.
Gezer’s sister, Asya Gezer, told Mezopotamya Agency, “We cannot make any sense of the prosecutor’s decision not to prosecute despite the persecution and torture my sister went through, and the footage of it.”
Stating that Garibe took any chance she had while she was held in prison to speak about the torture she experienced , her sister said, “There is a lot of evidence for anyone who wants to establish justice and punish those responsible.”
Gezer was arrested for violating curfew in Mardin’s Nusaybin district in 2016, and was sent to Kandıra No. 1 F-Type High Security Prison.
