The first hearing of the lawsuit relating to the assassination five years ago of Diyarbakır Bar Association’s Chair Tahir Elçi is being held today.
The first hearing of the trial is being held at Diyarbakır’s 10th Heavy Penal Court today. Elçi was assassinated in Sur, Diyarbakır (Amed), Turkey, whilst making a statement in front of the Four-Legged Minaret in the province of Diyarbakır on 28 November 2015.
The four defendants – three of whom are police officers – will be tried for the murder of Elçi. The defendants will be making their statements through use of the Audio and Video Information System (SEGBİS). The Diyarbakır Law Association, having prepared its expert report for the case, wants the police officers arrested. The case began at 10 am.
”The Murder of Tahir Elçi should not end with impunity”, stated the Human Rights Platform. It noted that Elçi fought for peace and human rights and was called the ‘Ambassador of Peace’ because of the nature of his struggle.
