The Kurdish ceremony marking the arrival of spring started in several Kurdish cities with torchlit marches and the lighting of the Newroz fire on Saturday night ahead of the Newroz rallies to be held in several world centres today.
Kurds gathered for a torchlit march in Makhmur (Maxmur) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). Young people celebrated the arrival of spring with the Newroz fire in the northern town of Qaladze (Qeladze).
A Newroz fire was lit in Syria’s Kurdish northeastern city of Qamishli (Qamishlo) on Saturday night.
Newroz celebrations have been combined with the anti-government “Jin Jîyan Azadî” protests that have been going on since September 2022 in the Kurdish-majority western provinces of Iran, known as Rojhilat in Kurdish. Women at the forefront of the protests ignited the Newroz fire with their headscarves.
Newroz celebrations started with fireworks by night in the Yüksekova (Gever) district of Hakkari (Colemêrg), a city in southeast Turkey.
The Democratic Student Council came together on Friday to light the first Newroz fire in Turkey’s eastern city of Van (Wan) before Sunday’s ceremony.
Women gathered in the Bağcılar district of Istanbul on Friday night to light their first Newroz fire ahead of a great Newroz rally on Sunday which hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend.
