Erling Folkvord, a Norwegian writer, politician, revered advocate of the Kurdish cause and steadfast supporter of oppressed peoples worldwide, was remembered at a funeral ceremony in Norway’s capital, Oslo, on Wednesday.
Folkvord, who was also a respected contributor to Medya News, died on 1 March while in the Swedish capital working on a book project – a comparative study of the Kurdish and Palestinian liberation movements – with his good friend Svein Olsen.
The memorial brought together Folkvord’s family, friends and supporters, who honoured his legacy with speeches and Kurdish music. The Executive Council of the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) sent a message praising Folkvord’s continuing struggle for democracy and justice, saying: “Erling has carved a significant place in the hearts of Kurds for an important part of his life. His fight for democracy and justice will never be forgotten”.
Endam Eziz, speaking on behalf of the Norwegian Democratic Kurdish Community Council, highlighted Folkvord’s founding efforts on behalf of the Kurds in Norway. Eziz noted: “Erling laid the foundation for the work done in Norway towards the Kurds. He reflected his observations from his many visits to Kurdistan in his work”.
Folkvord’s commitment to the Kurdish cause and his efforts to promote democracy and justice were celebrated at his funeral.
