At least six people were killed and 53 injured in the explosion that took place on a central avenue of Turkey’s largest city Istanbul, on Sunday. The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined.
After the explosion took place at about 4:20 pm (13:20 GMT) in Taksim, Istiklal Avenue, the governor of Istanbul, Ali Yerlikaya, announced the death toll on his Twitter account.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the explosion, AA, a state-run news agency, reported.
In addition, the Istanbul Criminal Court of Peace imposed a broadcast ban on all visual and audio news related to the explosion.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office Terrorist Crimes Investigation Bureau launched an investigation into the negative news about the explosion on social media accounts.
According to AA, Minister of Interior Süleyman Soylu and Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ are on their way to Istanbul.
Some videos posted online showed flames erupting and a loud bang, and pedestrians turning and running away.
