The Council of the European Union (EU) decided on Monday to impose new sanctions on Iran for violating human rights during suppression of the nationwide uprisings.
In line with the decision, 20 individuals’ and an entity seen to violate human rights will have their assets frozen, and a travel ban to the EU will be imposed.
Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, noted that Iranian authorities have continued to repress Iranian women and demonstrators, and that now the Iranian government have begun to execute protesters arrested during the uprisings.
“We see it as unacceptable to use capital punishment as a tool to repress the protesters. In the new package of sanctions for human rights violations, we are targeting those who are responsible for the repression of protesters,” said Borrell.
The sanctions include the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), which the EU describes as “a regime mouthpiece”, as well as the director, deputy director and some reporters of IRIB.
Also, Deputy Minister of Interior of Iran, the Commander-in-chief of the Iranian Army and some Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders from different regions were added to the EU’s sanctioned people list.
“The executions in Iran are blatant attempts to intimidate Iranians who want to live in freedom. We stand with them,” said German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Monday and added, “That’s why the EU launches new sanctions against Revolutionary Guards and others responsible.”
The Islamic Republic of Iran on Monday executed a second person for participating in the nationwide protests, and at least 27 other protesters are believed to be under death sentence, on charges ranging from involvement in the deaths of members of the paramilitary Basij forces, to damaging a guardrail, and kicking a rubbish bin.
