A Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) delegation chaired by Prof Mithat Sancar, co-chair of HDP, met in Brussels on 2nd June with Deputy Secretaries General of the Party of European Socialists, Giacomo Filibeck and Yonnec Polet.
Following their meeting, the PES expressed its support and solidarity to HDP in its fight for the rule of law and human rights in Turkey and to defend its right to exist as a democratic organisation.
The authoritarian Justice and Development Party (AKP) government aims to eliminate HDP and ban it as a political party, European Parliament deputy chair and Greek Syriza delegate Dimitris Papadimoulis also said after his meeting with the HDP delegation. “We agreed with the HDP on the need for a joint peace.”
They discussed on the meetings the current political situation in Turkey, the upcoming elections and election scenarios, the case to shut the HDP down and the attacks against the party, HDP said. The meeting was especially focused on the Kobanî case.
They exchanged ideas with EP officials on many important issues such as the war in Ukraine, NATO’s enlargement discussions and the Turkish government’s stance, cross-border operations and new attack and invasion plans against Rojava, HDP added.
HDP completed their meetings in the European Parliament.
On the first day, the HDP delegation met with politicians from the Greek PASOK/KINAL, Syriza, Italian Democratic Party, the EP Left Group (GUE/NGL) and the Greens Group.
On the second day, the delegation met with the Permanent Rapporteur of the EP for Turkey, the Foreign Relations spokesperson of the European People’s Party (EPP), EP Socialists & Democrats chair and the EP Security and Defence Subcommittee chair.
