The European Parliament (EP) is set to hold a conference titled “Rights and Freedoms in Turkey: Law, Prisons and the Kurdish Question” on 13 June to address the escalating concerns regarding human rights and freedoms in Turkey.
The conference, organised in collaboration with the European Lawyers’ Association for Democracy and Human Rights (ELDH) and the International Association for Law and Democracy (MAF-DAD), is expected to provide a platform for in-depth discussions and shed light on the alarming state of human rights and freedoms in Turkey, aiming to encourage international efforts to address these pressing issues.
The high-profile event will bring together prominent politicians and legal experts to discuss the increasingly alarming human rights situation in Turkey. The opening speeches will be delivered by Martin Schirdewan, the co-chair of the EP Left, along with Professor Bill Bowring, the co-chair of ELDH, and Heike Geisweid, the president of MAF-DAD.
The panels at the conference will focus on isolation and the conditions in Turkish prisons, with a specific focus on İmralı prison, the influence of the judiciary on Turkey’s political landscape and potential solutions to address the deteriorating human rights situation.
