Squarcina emphasised that the solution should be political rather than military, thus benefiting the Middle East, Europe and particularly the Kurdish and Turkish people. He highlighted the significance of respecting Kurdish rights and the broader impact of peace in Turkey and beyond, advocating Europe’s support for the Kurdish struggle.
Squarcina’s statements come amid growing calls from international politicians for a solution to the long-standing Kurdish question. The central focus of his message was the immediate release of Abdullah Öcalan, the Kurdish leader, who has been in solitary confinement for over two decades in Turkey. Squarcina stressed that Öcalan’s release is not just a humanitarian concern but also a strategic necessity for advancing peace and political stability in the region.
