The recent increase in military casualties in Turkey has sparked political unrest, with former Turkish nationalist-turned-pacifist Yannis Vasilis Yaylalı and journalist Erk Acarer voicing significant concerns about the nation’s military strategies. They draw the motives behind these operations into question, suspecting that Turkish soldiers may have been intentionally placed in dangerous situations for political reasons connected to the impending elections.
Yannis Vasilis Yaylalı, once a Turkish nationalist and now a Greek pacifist and activist, questioned the logic of Turkey’s military engagements, particularly in harsh winter conditions. He doubts the wisdom of deploying soldiers in regions familiar to Kurdish guerrillas, hinting at political objectives linked to the upcoming elections. “In defence areas, we observe impressive guerrilla operations. Yet, sending soldiers into such harsh winter terrain, an area well-known to the guerrillas, raises serious concerns. It seems as though these soldiers were knowingly sacrificed before the elections,” Yaylalı remarked.
Erk Acarer, a journalist known for his investigative reporting, contributed to the debate with three critical inquiries:
Public anxiety over reported military casualties is on the rise, accompanied by suspicions of unreported soldier deaths or injuries. Acarer challenges the Defence Ministry’s casualty reports’ transparency, referencing a case where a Major, reported as injured, is rumoured to have died in combat.
Acarer questions the intelligence preceding the attack and whether ground commanders, facing adverse weather, sought permission to withdraw but were instructed to remain. His overly specific question suggests he may know more than he reveals.
He underscores the necessity for clear and accountable communication from authorities to address public concerns and curb misinformation.
The spike in military casualties has fuelled intense political debate in Turkey. The ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) partnership with right-wing parties, especially the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), and the criticism from opposition groups, particularly the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), highlight the growing political divide.
Moreover, the recent statements by Devlet Bahçeli, leader of the MHP, have intensified the situation. Bahçeli’s threats against the CHP and the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) have been followed by a wave of anti-Kurd attacks across Turkey, exacerbating ethnic tensions.
