While Turkey’s offensive in the Garê mountains and the killing of 13 prisoners during Turkey’s bombardments is still the subject of heated debate, honorary chair of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), Ertuğrul Kürkçü, discussed the possible outcomes of the incident.
Kürkçü defines the Garê attack as a continuation of Turkey’s politics of war. “The government is trying to cover up the problems within the country by creating a fake victory, but it failed”, he said.
He also said that the AKP government is in crisis because of the defeat, and its domestic response will be destructive for the regime. “They still have not got over this shock. Erdoğan is trying to evade responsibility by saying, ‘They want to hold me responsible for the loss in Garê’. But he cannot do this as easily as he used to”.
Kürkçü also commented on government attacks against the HDP after the loss in Garê. “They tried to blame the HDP for the killings, but the opposition parties took the right position this time”, said Kürkçü.
He noted the latest statement made by the European Commission foreign affairs spokesman, Peter Stano, regarding the politics of Turkey. “Expressing concern is important but not enough”, he said.
