After a gunman, identified by local police as Onur Gencer, stormed the Peoples’ Democratic Party’s (HDP’s) office in the western city of Izmir and shot Deniz Poyraz fatally, her mother Fehime Poyraz rushed to the crime scene.
Using the excuse of “high-security measures” being taken by police to surround the building, Feyime Poyraz was not allowed in to see her dead daughter despite the hours she spent waiting in front of the HDP office building, together with a massive crowd which had gathered in solidarity with the HDP.
“They have slaughtered my innocent daughter. They did not let me go up and see my daughter. They did not let me see her. I will not bow down. I am the mother of a martyr. Happy is she who is the mother of a martyr.”
These are the words of Fehime Poyraz, who shared her feelings with Jin News during her painful wait.
Fehime Poyraz continued by saying: “They maliciously killed her inside. I pray to God that the perpetrators will not get away with it. May God not let the fascists get away with it. The fascists make plans against us. They are not our friends: once an enemy, always an enemy.
“Keep your enemy at bay. But we are far from doing that: we are in a heavy sleep. We need to wake up. We need to pull ourselves together. We are not honest with each other. We should unite. If not, we will fall, one by one.
“Enough is enough! Let us come hand-in-hand and stand up. How many more massacres should we have to wait for? I hope my daughter will be the last. May my daughter Deniz Poyraz be the last!”
