Death toll rises in clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan

The death toll in clashes that erupted on 27 September between Armenia and Azerbaijan continues to increase.

Nagorno Karabakh Ministry of Defense announced new losses on Monday morning. The official death toll announced by Armenia had risen to 31 by 10am.

Azerbaijan continued throwing cannon fire through the night, according to an announcement by Armenia’s Ministry of Defense.

The president of Karabakh announced that civilians lost their lives during the clashes .Azerbaijan has not yet announced the official death toll.

According to the Azerbaijan Khazar Research Institute, eleven people died in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defense warned the Armenian army to stop attacking civilian zones. Turkey is an ally with Azerbaijan in the conflict.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan called on the international community to ensure that Turkey does not involve itself in Armenia’s conflict with Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

On social media, Pashinyan also called for unity among the people of Armenia. The Azerbaijan President Aliyev appeared on television and stated that Armenia has been occupying Azerbaijan land for decades.

“I am confident that our successful counter-offensive operation will put an end to the occupation, to the injustice, to the 30-year-long occupation”, he said.

Both countries declared martial law. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged support for Azerbaijan. Azerbaijanis are a predominantly Turkic people with close ties to Turkey.

With the rise of a nationalist atmosphere in Turkey in support of Azerbaijan, some Armenian people in Turkey wrote about their fears on social media.
