A devastating 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Tibet’s northern Himalayan foothills early Tuesday, killing at least 95 people and injuring 130, Chinese authorities confirmed. The quake, centred in Tingri County near Mount Everest, occurred at 9:05 am (01:05 GMT) at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), shaking nearby Nepal, Bhutan, and India. The US Geological Survey reported a higher magnitude of 7.1.
Buildings collapsed, and landslides disrupted roads, hampering rescue operations. Emergency teams are working to reach survivors in remote areas as aftershocks continue to rattle the region. The area, prone to seismic activity due to tectonic collisions, frequently experiences earthquakes.
Rescue efforts focus on providing medical aid and shelter to displaced residents while authorities monitor structural damages in affected countries.
