The Turkish Court of Cassation took legal action against members of the country’s Constitutional Court on Wednesday, overturning a ruling regarding the continued detention of jailed opposition Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP) MP Can Atalay.

Co-chair of Turkey’s Pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (HEDEP) Tuncer Bakırhan says the Court of Cassation’s criminal complaint against Constitutional Court members amounts to a political coup attempt.
Mizgin Yalçın, a Kurdish teacher at a middle school in Turkey’s Kurdish-majority Diyarbakır, faces online harassment for educating students on the Kurdish names for cities.
And Turkey has been ranked 148th out of 173 countries with regards to the rule of law, according to the 2023 Global State of Democracy report by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance.
