Despite the polls not going in their favour, Turkey’s opposition pro-Kurdish parties, including the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), announced a new, post- election road map and expressed a continued determination to forge ahead with the struggle for change and fight for democracy in the country.
The Turkish Presidency’s official translation of President Erdoğan’s victory speech failed to capture the original divisive language used and omitted targeted attacks made against Selahattin Demirtaş, an opposition political prisoner in Turkey.
International observers have criticised the second round of Turkey’s presidential elections, citing biased media coverage and an unfair playing field that gave an unwarranted advantage to incumbent candidate Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Elsewhere, two journalists who reported on the death of Iran’s popular protest icon Jîna Mahsa Amini face a closed-door trial in Iran, raising concerns about transparency and press freedom in the country.
