Following the United States’ decision to sanction two Turkish-backed armed groups in the northwestern Syrian region of Afrin, an Autonomous Administration official as well as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have praised the sanctions, but called for more action to be taken to prevent human rights abuses.
On the other hand, a Syrian Kurdish opposition group, closely connected to the Kurdistan Regional Government, has united with the mercenary groups in Afrin to condemn the sanctions. While armed groups active in occupied Ras al-Ayn have gone as far as arresting individuals who have refused to protest the sanctions.
The pro-Kurdish Green Left Party in Turkey was targeted in two separate incidents over the weekend. In one incident their MP was forcibly detained while speaking at a graveside commemoration. In the second, a women left explosive materials outside the joint office of the Green Left Party and Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP).
An annual gathering of distinguished artists in the city of Brescia in Italy dedicated a full day of events in order to call for the release of Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s (PKK) jailed leader Abdullah Öcalan, as well as address concerns and challenges facing the Kurdish population.
