Results are coming in for Iraq’s local elections, held on Monday, with Kurdish parties securing a major presence in the Kirkuk and Mosul councils.
A minimum of 22,818 pro-Kurdish political party members have been detained in security operations in Turkey since 2015, according to Öztürk Türkdoğan, a spokesperson for the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy (DEM Party) Law and Human Rights Commission.
DEM Party spokeswoman Halide Türkoğlu visits Ankara’s Sincan Prison in show of support for Kurdish politicians imprisoned under Turkey’s high profile Kobani Trail. The defendants uphold human values, champion equality, freedom, and women’s rights, she said.
During budget talks in the Turkish parliament, George Aslan, DEM Party MP, greeted the assembly in Syriac to celebrate Christmas. The move drew criticism from the nationalist opposition İYİP, who insisted on Turkish being spoken in the assembly.
