Responding the incidents of serious human rights abuses conducted against the Kurdish population in the Afrin region of northern Syria, the US Treasury Department has announced sanctions against two Turkish-backed groups on Thursday.
The construction of a new settlement in the area surrounding the Kurdish-majority city of Afrin in northwestern Syria had been completed by Turkey with financial support from Saudi Arabia. The project has recently been criticised for being part of an on-going effort of demographic change and Turkification.
