Tuesday saw a total of 74 international press conferences heralding the launch of a global campaign calling for the release of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan and a peaceful resolution to the Kurdish conflict.
As the “Freedom for Öcalan, A Political Solution for Kurdistan” campaign kicked off, politicians, civil society representatives, activists, and academics convened in numerous cities around the world, sharing a unified pledge to fight for the release of Kurdish political prisoner Öcalan from total isolation on Turkey’s Imrali prison island, and continue his pivotal role in securing peace and democracy in the Middle East.
In response to Turkey’s attacks on civilian infrastructure in North and East Syria last week, Commander Mazloum Abdi said the Syrian Democratic Forces will “not hesitate” to confront Turkey on its military offensives against the Kurdish-led autonomous regions.
Meanwhile, Turkish President Erdoğan has pledged to intensify military operations in North and East Syria while simultaneously offering to mediate in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
