BREAKING # And we have an update on today’s bulletin from Turkey’s Kurdish-majority Van. Following two days of rigorous political objection and massive civil demonstrations, Turkey’s Supreme Electoral Council has re-issued the official election certificate of Abdullah Zeydan, co-mayor of the Van (Wan) municipality from the pro-Kurdish DEM party. This decision comes after the certificate was served to a candidate from the ruling AKP shortly after the polls had closed. The decision of the Supreme Electoral Council is hailed as a victory for democracy and Kurdish representation.
📍 Protests continue for a second day in Van and across Kurdish-majority cities in Turkey’s southeast, in response to an ‘electoral coup’ which disqualified a Kurdish mayor who won a landslide victory.
📍 There have been at least 89 detentions in the course of the demonstrations, with reports of brutality and torture, and a ban imposed in political assembly.
📍 Attacks on journalists have also intensifed as reporters face threats and injuries while reporting on the crisis, according to the Media and Law Studies Association.
📍 In other news, two hitmen reportedly sent by Ankara to assassinate Kurdish politicians on European soil were sentenced by a Belgian court to five years behind bars in absentia.
