📍 May Day rallies kicked off this morning with thousands lining the streets across Turkey. Turkish authorities banned May Day protests in Istanbul’s Taksim Square but demonstrators remain undeterred amid a heavy police clampdown.
📍 Thousands of workers are demonstrating for May Day in Kurdish-majority cities of southeast Turkey, with large rallies in Van, Batman, and Izmir. Meanwhile, in Kurdish-led North and East Syria, May Day street protesters demand an end to the isolation of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan.
📍 A pro-Kurdish DEM Party official has questioned the Turkish government’s lack of transparency over conditions at İmralı island prison, urging clarity on the treatment of inmates including Kurdish leader Öcalan.
📍 And in other news, the Rojava Film Commune, a northeast Syrian-based collective of producers and artists, continue work despite Turkish bombardments on the region.
