A Turkish drone attack claimed the life of Astay Muhammad, aged 55, and injured Mirza Ibrahim, aged 60, in Bokriskan, a village in the Pishdar (Pişder) district of the Sulaymaniyah (Silêmani) governorate in Iraqi Kurdistan on Wednesday morning, according to Community Peacemaker Teams – Iraqi Kurdistan (CPTIK).
The village is near Mount Qandil (Qendîl), which houses the Makhmour refugee camp, which has been a target of Turkey due to the alleged presence of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Recently, an attempt by Iraqi Kurdistan authorities to blockade the camp was thwarted following resistance from the camp’s inhabitants.
This attack is part of a broader pattern of increased Turkish military actions in the region, including a recent drone attack on Arbat Airport in Sulaymaniyah. Since the beginning of 2023, Turkish military activities have resulted in nine civilian deaths and six injuries in the region. CPTIK is calling for protective measures to safeguard civilian lives from military attacks.
