İmralı Delegation member and senior pro-Kurdish DEM Party figure Pervin Buldan has called for immediate negotiations to establish a parliamentary commission on the Kurdish issue.
Speaking to T24 on 19 May, Buldan welcomed a recent call by Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli to form such a commission within parliament. “We find the proposal positive and support it,” she said. “Bahçeli voiced what needs to happen. We’ve always stated that parliament must be the place to resolve this issue.”
Buldan said most parties were in favour and urged the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) to clarify its position without delay. “Negotiations on forming the commission must begin immediately,” she said. “If this can be done before the legislative year ends on 15 July, it will contribute positively to the peace process.”
She also endorsed the details of Bahçeli’s proposal, including forming a 100-member central commission supported by subcommittees and chaired by the speaker of parliament.
“Turkey needs democratisation,” she added. “Steps taken to resolve the Kurdish issue are steps toward democratisation, and legal reforms must address all areas of deadlock without discrimination.”
