Peoples’ Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party MPs Pervin Buldan and Sırrı Süreyya Önder issued a joint statement on their 28 December meeting with PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, stressing their cautious optimism but refraining from giving detailed information due to the “sensitivity of the process”.
“Due to the sensitivity of the process, we will not provide updates to the press until it reaches a certain level of maturity. This is not to hide anything from the public, but to respect the process. To sum up, we are much more hopeful than in previous attempts,” they said.
“Compared to previous efforts, I feel much more hopeful. This is the era of fraternity and peace. We will make a detailed announcement in the new year,” Önder told ANF.
Buldan, via a statement on social media, also reiterated the need for discretion while underlining their hope for progress.
The DEM delegation plans to make a comprehensive update in early 2025, reflecting the importance of Öcalan’s recent call for reconciliation and its potential impact on Turkey’s peace process.
