Brazilian social movements gathered outside the Turkish Consulate in Belo Horizonte on 18 December, to voice their condemnation of Turkey’s actions against Rojava, the autonomous democratic administration in North and East Syria (AANES). Organized by Movimento e Organização de Base de Minas Gerais, Organização Socialista Libertária, and Casa Invisível, the protest reflected a strong sense of international solidarity and concern for the people of Rojava.
The demonstration featured an array of activists, and members of social organisations and parties from across Brazil, who came together to support a revolution that rejects oppressive systems such as nationalism, capitalism, patriarchy, and religious fundamentalism. They expressed solidarity with the diverse communities of Rojava, which include Kurds, Assyrians, Arabs, Yazidis, Armenians, and others, all striving for a just and equal society.
In their speeches, activists highlighted the violence and human rights abuses perpetrated by the Turkish state, which has targeted the autonomous administration in Rojava. These actions have included systematic attacks on civilians, bombings, and threats to self-governance and independence. The protesters condemned Turkey’s hypocrisy in supporting Palestinian people while simultaneously persecuting the Kurdish population in Rojava.
