Turkey, which is preparing for a new operation against the Kurdish fighters in the Federated Kurdistan Region in partnership with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), continues its military activity on the borderline. Shipments have been made for days to Zawîte (Ormanlı), Aşût (Çığlı), Gêrman (Köprülü) and Elemûnê (Andaç) village of Şırnak’s Uludere district, located in Çukurca district of Hakkari (Colemerg) , located on the border line.
It was also stated that before the operation, pressure was exerted on the guards in the border villages of Hakkari. This mobility on the borderline also started in military bases located across the border.
It was stated that within the scope of the operation, whose signals have been given by the traffic of talks between Ankara and Hewler (Erbil) for months, special forces affiliated with the KDP also sent Peshmerga to many regions.
Doctor Kamuran Berwarî, from Duhok University and Vice President of the Academy of Political-Democratic Thought, talked to MA about Turkey’s preparations and results of the operation in the Federated Kurdistan Region in partnership with the KDP.
KDP-Turkey Relations
Stating that the KDP-Turkey relations date back to 60 years ago, Berwarî drew attention to the establishment of relations in terms of politics, economy, military and security. Emphasizing that the government of the Federal Kurdistan Region can have normal relations with neighbouring countries such as Syria, Iraq, Iran and Turkey on the basis of mutual respect, Berwarî said, “If the KDP wants to serve Bashur, it must establish relations with Turkey by taking into account the interests of the Kurdish people. Other than that, if different relations are established, it will cause great damage to all other parts, especially Bashur. That’s why I don’t find the relations that the KDP has developed with Turkey today right.”
Turkey Builds New Bases
Berwarî defined Turkey’s preparations for the new operation as “occupation” and said: “Turkey has had invasion plans since 1991. For this reason, Turkey’s military and intelligence forces have been in Bashur for 31 years. There are thousands of military, political, economic and educational institutions. When looked at in general, Turkey has also made great gains in Bashur Kurdistan. Now it is preparing for a major invasion. Apart from the 70 military bases established in the past, new bases are also being established today. Turkey’s aim is to occupy the whole of Bashur. Turkey is preparing to occupy the whole region up to the border of Kirkuk, Mosul and Rojava. For this, they are creating new military points and increasing the number of soldiers every day.”
Interests of The Kurds
Emphasizing the results of an operation to be launched in partnership with the KDP, Berwarî said, “Some regional and international states that carried out on 15 February 1999 an international conspiracy (the bringing of PKK Leader Abdullah Öcalan to Turkey) want the Kurds to have their achievements in 4 parts taken from them. They want to take these achievements with the support of certain Kurdish groups. The Kurds suffered greatly from the ‘Birakuji’ wars. There was such a war in the 80s and the Kurds suffered greatly. Again, from the beginning of the 90s to the early 2000s, there was a fratricide. In this process, both sides saw that these wars were not in the interest of the Kurdish people. Kurds realized once again that these wars were only in the interests of the Kurdish enemies and those who wanted to invade Kurdistan. That’s why everyone cursed the ‘Birakuji’ war,” he said.
Reminded Barzani’s Words
Reminding of Mesut Barzani’s statements condemning the war between the Kurds, Berwarî said, “He promised that they would not engage in this war again. Today, Massoud Barzani must reject and oppose this war, which will be waged in partnership with the KDP. Mesut Barzani, Nêçîrvan Barzani and the Bashur Kurdistan government must stand against this war. If they cannot do this either, they should at least act impartially towards a possible war between the PKK and Turkey. He warned that if the KDP supports Turkey in Bashur, it will go into a big mistake and chaos.”
Kurds Must Oppose
Calling all Kurds to oppose a possible operation by the KDP together with Turkey, Berwarî said, “All political parties, non-governmental organizations and parliament should react to this. At the same time, the people of Turkey and the Kurds living in four parts of Kurdistan must stand against this,” he said.
Kurdish Actors Must Gather
Emphasizing that a possible operation will not be an ordinary war, Berwarî said, “This war will not be like a war on a mountain or a stream. This war will bind all of Bashur Kurdistan. The PKK is trying to stay away from this war as much as possible with its statements. Peshmerga and Bashur forces must also be against this war. All Kurdish actors in Bashur need to come together. With the participation of representatives in four parts of Kurdistan and the intervention of the USA, England, France and Russia, this war must be ended before it starts.”
Turkey’s Plans
Emphasizing that the plans Turkey wants to realize will not be successful, Berwarî said: “Today, a small piece of land remains from the Ottoman Empire. If Turkey enters such a war, neither the state nor the land will remain.”
