Libya has experienced division, extreme destabilisation and conflict since the overthrow of former dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Ahmed Al-Mismari, the spokesperson for Khalifa Haftar’s forces, has stated that Turkey has not withdrawn from Libya or engaged in meaningful negotiations or mediation efforts. As reported by Hawar News Agency, he stated that tensions have increased as it has concentrated its forces at the Watiye base.Al Mismari noted that a Turkish military ship reportedly entered the port of El Xims on 4 January and left the port a few hours later. There was reportedly significant military activity of the Turkish military forces in both Watiye and Misrata bases.
He stated that, within the framework of the 5 + 5 Committee (UN-led mediation by the 5+5 Joint Military Commission and warring parties in Libya, who agreed on a ceasefire in October 2020), the ceasefire provisions were being applied, and attempts were being made to produce and export oil as well as to re-open air traffic to the west, east and south.
