In a recent interview with Medya News, Veronica Maio, a representative from the Academy of Democratic Modernity (ADM), shed light on the organisation’s mission and its ongoing efforts to foster international solidarity among various socialist groups.

ADM, an internationalist institution, is dedicated to disseminating the ideas and ideology of jailed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan, with a focus on creating a platform for shared discussions and collaboration.
Maio emphasised ADM’s commitment to connecting with diverse socialist organisations worldwide. “ADM tries to know different social socialist organisations all around the world and bring them together in order to discuss and develop common ideas, common principles, and a common line of action,” she explained. This collaborative approach is integral to addressing global challenges arising from a common origin – the prevailing system.
A recent Art of Freedom conference in Basel, Switzerland, exemplified the organisation’s goal of uniting different groups to collectively confront contemporary issues. By fostering open dialogue, ADM seeks to find solutions to shared problems that transcend geographical boundaries.
Maio underscored the importance of collective action, noting, “We are facing the same system, we are facing the same problem in a different system, we are facing the same problem in different parts of the world. So, it’s so important to come together and discuss.”
For the international conference, the Academy extended invitations to various organisations with diverse historical backgrounds, emphasising a shared commitment to fundamental principles, such as the importance of the liberation of women, ecology, and radical democracy.
In a separate conversation with Medya News, Aratz Estonba and Marixe Ruiz de Austri, internationalist Catalan activists, also shared their perspectives on the Art of Freedom conference.
“The main point of these conferences is that you can actually meet internationalist forces that can contribute and build these collaboration networks,” said Estonba and acknowledged that while conferences alone are not sufficient, they serve as a crucial step in establishing internationalist structures.
Estonba further emphasised the significance of the conference in fostering dialogue among diverse internationalist forces. “It’s the first time we find so openly the Kurdish movement and different internationalist forces talking about the self-determination,” he noted.
For the activists, the right to self-determination is a pillar of revolutionary struggles globally, particularly in Europe, as it implies the need to build nations beyond the capitalist system.
The ‘Art of Freedom: Organising and Collective Resistance Strategies’ conference concluded on Sunday with a powerful message of global solidarity. The three-day event, organised by the ADM, brought together global organisations from Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia to explore the challenges posed by capitalist modernity and discuss strategies for addressing them.
